The boxers scheduled to appear on the 8th edition of the ProAm boxing extravaganza scheduled for this Friday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) convened at the National Communications Network (NCN) studios yesterday afternoon for a live press conference and as usual spewed vitriol at each other.
Pauline London was her usual loquacious self, directing her barbs at Debbie Tyson. The last time the two met London had promised to ‘buss up’ Tyson’s mouth. Yesterday when she once again promised to deal with Tyson, a journalist pointed out that she is all talk and did not ‘buss up’ Tyson’s mouth in their previous encounter as she had promised. “Da is wha you think. I see she swallowing she blood,” London emphatically retorted.
Tyson for her part traded word for word with her nemesis. “The last time I did not train properly so she get off but this time I am well prepared and Pauline had better watch out,” she warned.
“I’m thirsty and am coming to eat and drink from the very first bell,” London declared.
“That’s okay,” retorted Tyson, “The last time I used a kerosene oil stove; this time it gon be Tex Gas.” The two continued their banter even after the questions were directed at the other fighters.
Meanwhile Clive Atwell was expected home yesterday afternoon from his St Lucia base where he had been honing his skills. He is scheduled to match gloves with Mark Austin in a bout that promises much. The latter fighter has come onto the professional scene with a bang having defeated seasoned fighters the likes of Cecil Smith and Shawn Pile. He has really demonstrated the attributes of a dangerous fighter but will be up against a smart and gifted pugilist in Atwell. How well he will be able to handle this bout will only be answered after the first bell sounds.
The main bout between former European boxing champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman and local pugilist Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones is shaping up to be a scorcher. Both principals appeared on ‘Boxing Revue’ a half hour programme on Channel Nine last Sunday evening and literally threatened each other. Eastman was the first to deliver his barbs. “I don’t have time to waste with this chap; I will knock him out in round two.”
“Talk is cheap,” retorted Jones, “At the end of the bout I would be the winner.” Indeed, Jones is applying himself to his sessions at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym under the watchful eyes of Lennox ‘Cappell’ Daniels who is working feverishly to whip his charge into an acceptable shape.
Muscularly built, Jones had boxed a couple of rounds with Kurt Bess, a lanky heavyweight pugilist whose height is ideal for preparations against Eastman, also a rangy fighter. He is bristling with confidence and has dispatched a missive to Eastman, warning him to come prepared for the toughest fight of his life. Jones also believes he has the artillery to back his words and anyone listening to him after witnessing his three epic encounters against Edmond DeCleau will nod in affirmation.
A stocky, peek-a-boo fighter, Jones had won the first but lost the second encounter against the Lindener but had rebounded to convincingly break the deadlock. He believes that he has enough artillery to take care of Eastman and cause a major upset. Obviously, Eastman does not support that view. Will he be able to back his chat and knockout Jones? Does Jones possess the artillery to dominate the former European champion? Fans would just have to be at the CASH on Friday night to witness the action as it unfolds.
Meanwhile, as is customary, NCN Television would be carrying blow by blow commentary on the bout for those unable to attend the live show. The first bell rings at 20:00hrs. Kaieteur Sport would be reporting on the amateur segment in tomorrow’s issue.
