A brave shop owner and swift action by police on the East Coast of Demerara, yesterday, led to the arrest of two criminals and the seizure of an AT 192 Toyota Carina, minutes after a daring robbery on a grocery store at Mon Repos.
The men were nabbed at Plaisance after their attempt to get away scot-free was foiled by the owner of the grocery who managed to follow them and give police their location.
Speaking with members of the media, Seeta Hussein, who along with her husband Rahim operate the Seeta and Rahim Grocery at Mon Repos, said that she had just reopened her business at around 15:00 hours when the men struck.
According to Seeta, she was selling a customer and as she raised her head she came face to face with the barrel of a gun, which was pointed at her by one of the bandits. She did not see when the bandits entered her store, but she observed that a strange white car was parked outside.
“When I raise, I see the man with the gun pointing to me and he say ‘give me all the cash’,” Seeta Hussein recalled.
She said that she grabbed some cash and gave it to the bandit who was not satisfied, and grabbed the entire drawer from the cash register.
The grocery store proprietress could not say how much money was taken.
The woman added that the bandit’s accomplice who was also in the store gun-butted one of the customers and they both ran and jumped into the waiting car and fled.
But her husband managed to track the bandits down to Plaisance several miles away while the police were alerted.
Acting quickly the police swooped down on the area and managed to arrest the two suspects.
However, this newspaper was unable to ascertain if any weapon was found on the men or if the stolen cash was recovered.
