Dear Editor,
I wish to ask the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) co-leader Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine and others in the party a question: Why is the death of Dr Walter Rodney being used for political gain?
It is obvious that ahead of every election season in Guyana this issue of Dr Walter Rodney’s death and investigation is brought to the fore by Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine and other members of the WPA.
I have been following this issue for the past 18 years and I can state categorically that this has been the case for the past 18 years, with the WPA party at every election season. I really couldn’t understand why is it that the WPA have been accusing the PNC Government indirectly for the death of Dr Walter Rodney when there is no piece of evidence to link the party or any past or present members of that party for Dr. Rodney’s death.
I am convinced like many others that if the PNC had something to hide from the nation they will have never supported or even called for an international probe into Rodney’s death, in May 2005.
So what’s the point, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine was trying to make in his recent statement on the death of Dr Walter Rodney, as reported in SN on 19 September, 2010.
The PNC long before it was under the leadership of Mr. Robert Corbin went to the extent to have Mr. Gregory Smith, who was accused of killing Dr Walter Rodney to be extradited from French Guiana to stand trial in Guyana when the French government indicated that it would be prepared to return Smith if it was satisfied that the information on which the murder charge had been based, met the criteria of France’s judicial system. The PNC believes in a true and impartial investigation into the death of Dr Walter Rodney and not speculations. The PPP/C Government did little or nothing to have Mr. Gregory Smith brought back to Guyana to stand trial for Dr Walter Rodney’s death. Perhaps the PPP/C Government has something to hide which may have been the reason why Government never pushed for an international probe into Dr Rodney’s death, before Mr. Gregory Smith died a few years ago in French Guiana.
I think this is what Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine needs to find out from the Government rather that blaming the PNC for Dr Rodney’s death at every election season.
It is clear that the PNC never played any role leading to Dr Walter Rodney’s assassination and it is time that the WPA stop using his death for political gain and trying to tarnish the name of the PNC.
The WPA should do the right thing and work with other opposition parties for the good of the country, especially at this time when the country is deteriorating under this PPP/C Government.
It’s time for change! Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine and others let us work together and vote for change in 2011 and return our country where it was once before.
