It is embarrassing to know the alarming number of secondary school students who are not capable of reading a simple kindergarten level novel.
A survey carried out in secondary schools around the country to estimate the level of reading skills of students discovered that most schools do not have a trained teacher to serve in this capacity. Some head teachers are of the opinion that most students come from the Primary level lacking the ability to read.
These children are not even able to pronounce words in syllables or to create words using blends, the survey found.
It also found that most of these institutions do not have functional libraries. A teacher from a high school in Region Ten said that children cannot be effective in their reading when schools are not in possession of reading materials given to them by the Education Ministry.
There were suggestions from several teachers that the Ministry of Education should implement phonics classes at all level in the secondary school curriculum.
One head teacher at a secondary school on the West Bank of Demerara stated that most students are not performing well in their examination as a result of them not being able to read the content of the examination paper. “It is not that they will not know the answers…but the problem is reading to select the correct answers”. At a secondary school in Georgetown, reading is taught up to Grade Nine, so students who do not grasp the concept will go throughout the rest of levels not knowing to read.
The solution to children’s reading inability also lies with their parents. Parents need to instill in their children from an early age the importance of reading.
