While the seasoned athletes turned in their usual outstanding performances, it was the emergence of new talents that dominated the two-day Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) Youth, Junior and Senior Championships at the Police Sports Club Ground.
Alton Seaforth, Trevon George and Natasha Albert were among those emerging athletes that had their time to shine at Eve Leary on Sunday. The three athletes joined the more seasoned, Jevina Straker, Ronald Payne and Kevin Bailey as Champion Athletes.
Seaforth won both the 200m and 400m races in impressive times to announce his arrival on the local athletics scene. He did 22.50 seconds in the 200m ahead of Delon DeAbreu and Sigmund Daniels, who had times of 23.50 and 24.00 for second and third.
Representing Ruralites Athletics Club, Seaforth then took the 400m from seasoned campaigner, Trevor Scotland in 50.70 seconds. Scotland had 51.20 seconds while Daniels was third in 53.70 handing Seaforth a well-deserved double after the race. George also followed with a double in the Under-18 male 800m and 1500m races. He returned a time of 2:12.60 in the 800m ahead of Malcolm Walcott and Kareem Mann, who had 2:12.90 and 2:16.60 respectively for second and third places in the race.
The Mercury Fast Lanners Athlete then turned in 4:24.40 to win the 1500m in a close finish with Walcott, who had 4:24.90 for second. Chavez Sital turned in 4:34.40 for third place. George, like Seaforth, finished with 20 points copping the age-group male top athlete.
Albert, from her sojourn in the women’s field events, amassed 24 points to be adjudged the best female athlete in that category. Jevina Straker continued her local dominance in the girls’ U-18 middle distance events with two win and 20 points.
Straker emphatically took the 1500m race in 5:12.30, leaving former rival, Jenella Jonas, who is clearly struggling for form, in second with 5:41.00. Tisha Grimes was third in 5:55.00. She then returned take the 800m from the same group in 2:24.40 seconds.
Payne won both the men’s discuss throw and shot putt for his points. He threw 39.36m to beat a long-time rival, Terrence Johnson (39.16m) while Royston Ross was third with his 37.33m mark on the scorching field that was well marked for the event.
The Police Sports Club athlete tossed the metal ball 11.24m to win the shot putt, narrowly ahead of Michael Pollydore, who had a best throw of 11.23m. Johnson was third with his 10.90m mark with Ross finishing fourth with a disappointing 10.68m.
Bailey made no mistake in the U-20 boys 800m race, winning in 2:03.30 with Kelvin Ceres second in 2:05.60. Mandela Collins was third with 2:07.20. Bailey won the 1500m in 4:26.70 as Akeem Benjamin finished second in the two-man race in 4:40 seconds.
One of the highlights of the day was the men 800m race where Cleveland Thomas took on Cleveland Forde for one of the best finishes in local track and field recently. The race was decided in the last five metres as the fast time demonstrates.
Forde ran 1:56.10 that became the fastest time over the distance locally this year, while Thomas ran 1:56.50 for second. Afeez Samad was third with 2:26.00. The event was good warm-up for the Joint Services Competition that starts next week at the same venue.
