With nowhere else to call their homes, residents of the Diamond Junior Staff area, on the East Bank of Demerara, are bracing themselves for more spring tides, which are to resume today.
The area is among several which have been identified as being likely to be affected by spring tides from today to September 27.
Some residents of Diamond Junior Staff area; yesterday told this newspaper that they have some amount of measures in place in order to prevent loss during upcoming spring tides.
When Kaieteur News visited the community yesterday, many of the Diamond Junior Staff residents were expressing concern about the spring tides.
Some said that recent floods have severely affected them and; they cannot, by any means, afford to risk more losses.
According to Deowatti Ram, shop owner and resident of the area, her pool table, which she bought for $ 250,000 GYD, was damaged. She claimed that she wants to sell the pool table but for the time being she will have to put it on props in order to avoid the table from encountering further damages.
Padmini Singh, of Lot 37 Diamond Junior Staff, told this newspaper that 56 of her ducks perished when spring tides swamped her home. Only four ducks remain.
Singh, who has four children, revealed that her husband, who is physically disabled, is at present unemployed.
Padmini claims that she would love to move but has no alternative place to go.
Shabna Khan, another resident, said that building materials she had stored under her house were damaged by the recent high tides.
Other residents mentioned that after the floods, a canal in the area was excavated.
They hope that this action will spare them from the coming spring tides.
Over the last few weeks, locations all along the coast and river banks in Guyana have been experiencing flooding as a result of spring tides.
Areas that are likely to be affected include River View, Ruimveldt, Herstelling, Farm, Craig, Diamond, and Friendship on the East Bank of Demerara.
Areas likely to be affected on the West Bank and West Coast Demerara include Vive la Force, Catherina, Vriesland, Wales/Patentia, Bell Vue, Bagotville/La Grange and Vreed-en-Hoop.
