BCB commence early start to 2011 season
A classy unbeaten 54 from No. 3 batsman Eon Hooper led the Berbice ‘A’ team to a comfortable 8 wicket victory over the Berbice 2011 Preparatory Under-19 team at the Area ‘H’ ground on Thursday.
The match was organised by the Berbice Cricket Board Special Events Committee to allow the ‘A’ team practice ahead of their upcoming Georgetown trip and also to start the Board’s preparation of its Under-19 team ahead of the 2011 season.
The Under-19 team won the toss, took first strike and posted 111-7 in their allotted 20 overs with Shailendra Shameer hitting 23, national player Dominic Rickie 20 and Shailendra Hardyal 16 not out.
Bowling for the ‘A’ team, off spinners Hooper 2-6 and Krisendat Ramoo 2-11 were the main wicket takers with one wicket apiece for Keon Joseph and Steve Latcha.
In reply the ‘A’ team lost national standby wicket keeper Anthony Bramble caught by Shawn Perreira off medium pacer Hardyal for 1 at 7-2 in the 2nd over before Harrinarine Chattergoon and Eon Hooper added 85 for the 2nd wicket.
Chattergoon was bowled by the first ball from left arm spinner Waqar Hassan for a well played 39 (4×4, 1×6) at 92 for 2. Hooper 54 not out (8×4, 1×6) and the elegant Ranga Lachigadoo Latchana then guided their team to victory in the 14th over with Latchana not out on 10. Hardyal ended with 1-17 and Hassan 1-13.
Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster announced that the Board from September 2010 to March 2011 would be organising numerous matches and coaching sessions for the County’s Under-15 and 19 teams in order to select the best possible players for the 2011 junior Inter-County tournaments.
Foster disclosed that the Board strongly believes in very early preparation as was evident when the County dominated the Digicel Twenty20 and DJ Stress tournaments.
Next Friday, the ‘A’ team will clash with the Demerara’s Under-23 team for the Colin Wiltshire Memorial Cup with the BCB hosting the Demerara team the following week for the Leslie Amsterdam Memorial Cup.
