Cricket fans still distressed over the ill fortunes of the Guyana Amazon Conquerors in the Champions’ League 20/20 cricket tournament currently underway in South Africa, may derive some consolation from the fact that local cricket administrators continue to mould young talent that may someday gel into a true force to take up the mantle of international cricket at that level.
To this extent, the Georgetown Cricket Association will stage the 2010 Pee Wee League competition that gets underway today at the Banks DIH Ground Thirst Park with two matches. The action starts at 09:00hrs when the Malteenoes Sports Club play the Everest Cricket Club, while the Demerara Cricket Club oppose the Georgetown Cricket Club starting at 13:00hrs.
The tournament continues next Saturday, September 25 with two other exciting matches and subsequently every other weekend until the finals slated for October 16 at the same venue.
Meanwhile, Banks DIH is the major sponsor of the tournament and yesterday morning top officials of that company unveiled the sponsorship package. The beverage giants have agreed to stage the matches on their Thirst Park ground as well as provide trophies and medals for the various winners. They would also provide snacks and beverages for the various teams.
Communications Manager of the Banks DIH Ltd, Troy Peters handed over the package to the organizers even as he relayed deep pleasure on behalf of Banks DIH Ltd. He said that his officials of the beverage company were satisfied that the tournament, under the capable guidance of President of the Guyana Cricket Association, Roger Harper, would be well organized and ran.
Mr. Peters noted that the top brass of the Banks DIH willingly acquiesced to the sponsorship package because of their commitment to the development of sports as well as the sportspersons involved. “Today we are partnering with the GCA and we are confident that the returns from this programme will be reflected a few years from now,” said Mr. Peters.
He further voiced the optimism that the current crop of players participating in the tournament would eventually gel onto the international stage. “Banks (DIH) is committed to the development of sports and we strive to ensure that our contribution is significant,” the Communications manager concluded.
The tournament would be played under the Tropical Mist brand, a gold medal product produced from the company’s pure artesian well waters.
