– Depart today for B/dos
The national rugby squad who’re supposed to leave today to participate in the Commonwealth games in Delhi, India was the recipient of Blazers donated by local telephone giants GT&T at the Company’s Canteen on Hadfield Street yesterday.
Making the presentation on behalf of the Company was Deputy General Manager Public Communication Terry Holder, who in his remarks said that they were indeed happy to be associated with the Guyana Rugby Football Union and the champions that have consistently brought pride and glory to this country.
Holder stated that the Games in India is a much greater and higher profile tournament that most that the team would have participated in previously, but they have no doubt that the team will have the Golden Arrowhead flying high.
“We know that they will make GT&T, the country and themselves proud during the competition,” Holder believed.
President of the Union Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento in his presentation spoke of GT&T’s consistent support for rugby, outlining that it is not only local rugby that they support, but the West Indies team as well. He disclosed that Guyana is five-time Caribbean champions that have qualified for the Commonwealth Games, the IRB Championship and the Pan Am Games in Mexico next year. He added that had it not been for GT&T coming forward and signalling its support, the cost of the Blazers would have had to be borne by the Union.
He promised that the team will travel to Barbados in the GT&T sponsored Blazers, where they are scheduled to be engaged in a five-day Camp, before going on to Loughborough University in the UK to participate in a one-day tournament ahead of their arrival in India.
Nascimento said that time and circumstances will determine what medal they will return with, pointing out that the team have worked hard, but the work isn’t over since the Barbados and UK stints are no holidays.
“We go to Barbados to continue the work that started here and we then move to Loughborough University to challenge some of the top Sevens teams there.”
The team is expected to leave today, but is expected to meet the Honourable Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony shortly before departure.
The full team is: Claudius Butts (Captain), Theodore Henry, Walter George, Richard Staglon, Dominic Lespierre, Dane Parks, Dwayne Schroeder, Avery Corbin, Christopher Singh, Kevin McKenzie, Ronald Mayers and Albert LaRose.
