The eagerly anticipated ProAm boxing card is normally staged on the last Friday of each month and the action on Friday 24 is expected to be just as heated and action packed as the preceding cards.
The main bout between former European boxing champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman and local pugilist Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones is shaping up to be a scorcher, that is, if one can depend on Jones to back his chat.
When Kaieteur Sport visited the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym on Wednesday afternoon last Jones had quite a lot to say and has promised to inflict a severe beating on the former European champ.
Jones is conducting training sessions under the watchful eyes of Lennox ‘Cappell’ Daniels who is working feverishly to whip his charge into an acceptable shape. Jones who sports a muscular physique had just wrapped up sessions after sparring with Kurt Bess, a lanky heavyweight pugilist whose height is ideal for preparations against Eastman, also a rangy fighter.
Jones is bristling with confidence and has dispatched a missive to Eastman, warning him to come prepared for the toughest fight of his life.
Jones also believes he has the artillery to back his words and anyone listening to him after witnessing his three epic encounters against Edmond DeCleau will nod in affirmation. A stocky, peek-a-boo fighter, Jones had won the first but lost the second encounter against the Lindener but had rebounded to convincingly break the deadlock. He believes that he has enough artillery to take care of Eastman and cause a major upset.
Kaieteur Sport was unable to assess Eastman’s training regiment since he is currently operating out of Berbice. One can only take a cue from his most recent fights and even then he presents a foreboding proposition for Jones. Eastman possesses vast experience having practiced his trade in the United Kingdom, hence the ‘Battersea Bomber’ sobriquet.
Eastman would have also displayed his wares in North America and the fight that readily comes to mind is the William Joppy slugfest.
He turned in a masterful performance and eventually dropped Joppy in the final round and even though the pundits felt that he had done enough to earn the decision, the judges awarded the bout to the American fighter. Eastman next fought former middleweight world champion, Bernard ‘The Executioner’ Hopkins while he lost the bout, the Hopkins encounter would have improved on his experience.
The ‘Battersea Bomber’ returned to Guyana and defeated Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis, capturing the middleweight title before disposing of ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton and Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes in similar fashion. He then became entangled with the law and was forced out of the ring while he cleared up those issues.
Whether he is capable of ignoring those issues and turning in a top class performance will only be ascertained on fight night.
Debbie Tyson engages Pauline London in the main supporting bout on the card. Her entry into the professional arena was awesome and laden with great promises. In her first fight she disposed of Avalon Scotland in the first round in typical Tyson style but since then she has dropped a lopsided decision to Sharon Ward and another to Pauline London. While admitting that she lost fair and square to the former pugilist, Tyson is adamant that she was given a raw deal against London. She requested and was granted a return bout and from the intensity of her preparations one is tempted to believe that she has something special in store for her fans. They would have to wait until fight night to witness it.
The other boxers that comprise the card are also in intense training and Kaieteur Sport would be monitoring their activities leading up to fight night.
