Umpires award match to W/naam after EB E’bo refuse to continue the game
A five wicket haul by national U-19 player Anthony Adams enabled South Essequibo to beat Pomeroon by 90 runs in Zone A, while in zone B the umpires awarded the match to Wakenaam after the visiting East Bank Essequibo team refused to continue playing as the Busta Essequibo Cricket Board 50 overs Festival commenced last Sunday with two matches.
In the lone Zone A fixture which was originally scheduled to be played in South Essequibo but was later shifted to the Cavaliers ground in Pomeroon because the grounds in South were not in playing condition, South Essequibo batted first and scored 184-9 after the game was reduced to 36 overs due to rain.
Jagdesh Dindyal hit four fours in a top score of 44 while former national U-19 players Royan Federicks made 31 (5×4) and Dillon Heyliger 24 (1×4, 1×6). Darshan Lall picked up 3-13 from 8 overs and James Cornelius 3-37 off 6 overs for Pomeroon who were skittled out for 94 in 19 overs in reply.
Eric Gomes led with 26 (3×4) and Oscar Richmond 22 (1×4, 2×6). Left arm spinner Adams bagged 5-24 off 5 overs and Heyliger 3-19 off 6 overs for the winners.
Over in Zone B at the Wakenaam Community Center Ground, the umpires awarded the match to Wakenaam after the East Bank Essequibo team refused to continue the game.
Things took a turn when the umpires who had earlier issued a warning to the East Bank team for time wasting, awarded five penalty runs to the batting team (Wakenaam) and instructed the fielding team captain Trevor Benn who was bowling at the time to complete the over with another bowler.
Meanwhile, East Bank Essequibo batted first and were bowled out for 121 in 31 overs. National pacer Trevon Garraway scored 24 (1×4,1×6) while Kevon Boodie (14), Jason Heyliger (13), Yougister Bachan (13) and Lennox Andrews (12) reached double figures as most of the batsmen seemed reluctant to use their feet to the spinners. Off spinner Nazeer Mohamed troubled all the batsmen who faced him, snaring 3-15 off 7 overs while Seon Venture took 2-19 off 2.3 overs and national U-19 allrounder Ricardo Adams grabbed 2-6 from 2.1 overs.
Wakenaam in reply progressed to 15-1 in 3.1 overs when the rain came and sent the players off the field at 2:05 pm. When play resumed at 4:10 pm, the home team were given a revised target of 60 in 20 overs needing a further 45 runs for victory.
The progressed to 52-1 in 6.1 overs when the umpires awarded the game to Wakenaam.
Navishaul Pooran and Tulsieram Ramadeen were not out on 11 each. Edwin Burnette was the lone wicket taker for the visitors.
