A cancer patient’s plight
Cancer patient 59-year-old Nanranie.
A journey from Essquibo to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to seek cancer treatment proved to be a hassle for 59-year-old Nanranie.
The elderly woman who resides on the Essequibo Coast, was diagnosed with the disease mid last year and was put on treatment.
She said that at the end of her chemotherapy treatment, she was given a letter by her doctor to report to the Georgetown Public Hospital on September 17, 2010, for a cancer surgery.
According to the woman, she traveled to Georgetown via the ferry yesterday, with the intention to have the surgery done, only to be told by a young lady who works at the clinic that the doctor would not be coming to work.
“Why would they give me a date when the doctor would not be working? They know I live so far. What would I do now”?
“I was at the hospital since 06:30am and up to 02:00pm the girl at the clinic told me that the doctor will not be working today,” Nanranie said.
The visibly shaken woman said that she is in severe pain and has no relatives to stay at in Georgetown. She was left with the only option of returning home without having the surgery done.
