Plans by the Mabaruma Heritage Committee to make this year’s Amerindian Heritage Sports programme the best ever, received a time boost of trophies by Corporate Citizen Giftland Office Max, yesterday.
Under their Kelme Brand, Giftland Office Max Marketing Manager Compton Babb handed over six trophies to members of the organising committee at their Water Street Headquarters.
This year’s activities, the 4th annual which will also see a number of beauties vying for the coveted crown in the Miss Region 1 Pageant, will see members of the Moruca sub-regions, Port Kaituma and Mabaruma sub-regions battling for top honors in volleyball, cricket, football and circle tennis.
Babb handed over first place trophies for male and female cricket, female circle tennis, male and female football and the most valuable player in the male football competition.
Commenting on his company’s contribution, Babb said that they considered it a privilege to be assisting in the successful staging of the sports activities for Heritage month celebrations in Mabaruma.
“We are committed to the development of sports in Guyana and we readily accepted the opportunity to be on board in Region 1 as we are keen on development at the community level. This is a continuation of our overall obligation towards development of our youth and we wish all the teams that will be taking part all the best.”
In response, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer of the Mabaruma Heritage Committee Maite Hercules expressed gratitude to Giftland Office Max for their contributions towards the activities.
Hercules disclosed that the three days of activities in the area will get cracking on September 24 from 07:00hrs with a volleyball extravaganza which will involve male and female teams competing at the Under-17 and open levels. This will take place at the Mabaruma Compound Volleyball Court.
Canoe racing, swimming, in the boat tug-o-war and speed boat racing are set for the Kumaka Water Front on September 25 beginning at 09:00hrs. From 14:00hrs at L&D Resort, Kumaka, cassava grating competition and crab catching among other activities will be contested while the much anticipated Miss Region 1 Heritage Pageant is set for the same venue from 19:00hrs.
Sunday 26 at the Mabaruma Settlement Ground will see cricket, circle tennis and football being contested from 09:00hrs. All the activities will see male and female teams competing.
Hercules noted that the aim of the Mabaruma Heritage Committee is to promote various cultural activities, sports and health related issues including HIV/AIDS in various schools and communities within the areas of Region 1.
“Our mission is to help the youths and communities of Region 1 by providing the opportunity to educational training programmes and by assisting these communities to promote culture and sports.”
