Dear Editor,
I refer to an article which appeared in Kaieteur News of September 2, 2010, on page 3, captioned: “We don’t need anyone’s approval for this – Jagdeo”.
I was particularly bothered by the statement allegedly made by the President: “it is this unpatriotic sense…” who could be more unpatriotic than the President himself. He and his Ministers have awarded a contract US$15.4M, to Synergy Holdings, a company that has absolutely no experience in any hydroelectric project.
What would happen if there is a mistake or lapse in judgment by Synergy Holdings? As a Guyanese I find the behaviour of Mr. Jagdeo very un-presidential and unbecoming for a head of state.
What about the land that has to be cleared, in that area, to facilitate that project? What about the land that has to be cleared of trees and other natural habitats, what about the environment?
The other thing is the lack of consultation by the Government with the people on these different projects. No one knows for sure what is really happening with this and other projects in various parts of this country. Citizens only know what they read in the press, but there is no consultation with them in their local communities to involve them in these projects.
The Alliance For Change (AFC) is quite right to bring it to the attention of the Americans because they continue to give money to this government and sign deals with them in spite of the many public expressions of dissatisfaction by the people of this country and the reported cases in the press of lack of transparency and proper accountability. This is not good governance.
Other media organisations should join Kaieteur News in bringing this and other shady government awards and deals to the attention of the public because at the end of the day it is the citizens, who are suffering because Guyana could never, prosper under this cabal running this dear land of ours.
