FTCS $335M, BK $660M
BK International has submitted the highest bid to supply ‘geotextiles’ for use in the construction of the Northern Relief Canal for the East Demerara Water Conservancy, while Falcon Transportation and Construction Services submitted the lowest bid(FTCS) . This project was tendered for by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Geotextiles are permeable fabrics which, when used in association with soil, have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect, or drain. Typically made from polypropylene or polyester, geotextile fabrics come in three basic forms: woven (looks like mail bag sacking), needle punched (looks like felt), or heat bonded (looks like ironed felt).
These geotextiles are used as the base for road works. They are also used to support heavy-duty equipment that operates in swampy conditions or in places where the soil is extremely loose.
In Guyana when Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company needed heavy equipment to work on the Georgetown foreshore an excavator sank in the sand and was soon covered by the rising tides.
Had the operator been using geotextile fabric then the excavator would have been supported and would not have been lost to the Atlantic Ocean.
Chief Executive Officer (ag) of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, Lionel Wordsworth, asked about how much of the commodity is required and to what specifications, requested that the questions be sent electronically to him and he would provide the details urgently.
The bids that were submitted for the project and announced at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board’s meeting on Tuesday include:
