Dear Editor,
My heart goes out to the family and friends of Sheema Mangar, whose short life was cut down by modern-day “choke and robs” who prey on decent hard working people.
Tears ran down my cheeks for this pretty girl. How could anyone be so brutal in killing this young girl? Every Guyanese I have spoken with in NY talk about the robbery and the girl’s death. They all feel deeply hurt and empathize with the family for their loss. This was a senseless killing. The bandits had no reason to murder this beautiful girl. They have a callous disregard for life and they should be hunted them down. It is pleasing that the police have gotten some leads into the murder and have two persons in custody for questioning.
The society must have no mercy for the cold blooded murderer(s). I support the family’s call for capital punishment for the murderer; they deserve the death penalty. Whoever have any clues or leads should alert the police and don’t protect the thugs for they will strike again if not stopped. Next time the victim could be your loved one.
The Government needs to do more to combat crime and to catch criminals (solve pending crimes) and bring them to book. The Government should seriously consider putting up surveillance cameras all over the crowded cities (and towns) to keep an eye on criminal activities. Cameras are the next best thing to actually having cops on the scene. New York cops use surveillance techniques and have been quite successful in deterring crime or catching criminals in their acts.
Recently, surveillance cameras assisted in catching two criminals who killed a Guyanese. Also, several store owners in Richmond Hill were robbed and killed by outsiders and no one caught for the crimes. Since cameras were set up, the crime rate in Richmond Hill has dropped. If cameras were up around the city, the killers of Mangar would have been caught quickly and the evidence available to convict them.
