After being forced to postpone the semi-finals which was scheduled to be played last weekend, Organisers of the Tradewind Tankers ‘True Champions’ Volleyball Tournament told Kaieteur Sport via telephone on Monday that the way is now cleared for the resumption of the competition this Saturday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The tournament which had to be re-scheduled due to permission not being granted by the National Sports Commission for the use of the facility last Saturday is slated to commence at 18:00 hrs with the first of two semi-final matches.
The fixtures will see Young Achievers battle Rollers, while Port Mourant takes on Castrol Strikers with the winners advancing to the final, while the two losers face off for the third place.
Young Achievers of West Demerara that ended the preliminary phase with the most points have proven that their No.1 seeding is authentic after producing another excellent performance during the round which was played at Port Mourant.
Their dominance has been such that they’ve carted off all the monthly top prizes of $20,000 and this is despite missing a few key players.
In the last stanza, they closed the day with an aggregate 311 points to push the ever-improving Port Mourant team into second place on 293 points, while Castrol Strikers with 288 and Rollers 274 point rounded out the top four.
Once again they are expected to be led by the spirited Randy Adams, who will look to his next most experienced team-mate Christopher Ramsundar to lead their charge, while Rollers, who performed below expectations on the last occasion, should not be underestimated.
They have a few seasoned players in their line-up with loads of experience and might just be saving their best performance for this stage of the competition.
Setter Errol Chase seems to have a good grasp of the game and is a cunning player, while Seon Wilson, Imran Azeez and Mark DaCosta are all formidable players with loads of knowledge.
The other semi-final should be the game of the evening with the veteran unit of Castrol Strikers going up against the budding talent of Port Mourant Training School comprising mainly of students. Castrol has struggled for consistency throughout the competition, but their superior experience and the fact that they have a few players with national caps should take them over the line.
Once again, Dester Hoppie should command the setting assignment, while Adolph Davis is the designated spiker. Former national standout Ian Wills, who missed the last round, is expected to return to strengthen the line-up.
The visitors quest for an upset will be spearheaded by the six-foot plus Quacy Matheson, who had a remarkable last round, while Captain Jared Jhingree and Trevor Lucas have both shown admirable improvement.
They seemed to be a young energetic unit and could create an upset.
