The upcoming National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships that is scheduled for the National Stadium, November 9-12, received a timely corporate injection from local telecommunications giant, Digicel, yesterday.
Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Gregory Deane handed over the cheque worth $3.6M at the Boardroom of the Ministry of Education, following his brief remarks that included a pitch for corporate Guyana to support the dreams of student-athletes.
“I think that if we as a corporate entity can make these dreams come through then I believe other corporate entities should come on board and support these school kids,” Deane said, thanking the Management Committee of the event for requesting his support.
The Digicel CEO said that the company had two successful events of similar nature, the Athletic Association of Guyana Under-23 Games in Georgetown and the Classics in Linden, so they were convinced that the schools’ nationals would produce similar results.
“We thought it best to come on board because these were well-attended. I am sure we remember the competition of the School Championships; the inter-house, inter-zone and all of that,” Deane recalled, adding that Digicel is proud to be associated with the event.
Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Education, Phulander Khandai, described the gesture as “an enormous investment in our youths”, before apologising for the absence of the Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, who was attending another meeting.
Khandai said that the company, with their contribution, was pioneering the future generation that he believed has great prospects in Guyana. The Permanent Secretary said that their budget for the event is huge, but he was certain that the competition is worthy.
“Students who are athletes tend to do better in academics. Lots of athletes have come out of this system and gone on to represent Guyana with pride. It is only fitting that we continue what we’re hoping would become a fine Guyanese tradition,” Khandai noted.
He said that he will work to ensure that the requirements set out will be fulfilled so that both the Ministry of Education and Digicel would benefit from what both stakeholders hoped would be a long-term relationship as Schools Championship reaches 50 years.
President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Colin Bynoe said that the time has come for the event to attract major corporate branding, which is why he is grateful that Digicel has come forward in a major way to support what is being dubbed a mega sports event.
“We need to get corporate sponsors on board. We do feel that with Digicel leading the way other corporate sponsors will come on board because that will make the Championships much easier to manage,” Bynoe told members of the media among other officials.
He too made a pitch for other sponsors to support the event that is expected to be the biggest and best ever since it will be commemorating the 50 years of the championships. The championships are expected to be filled with glitz and glamour at the National Stadium.
