Dear Editor,
I write to you with a concern that I am sure bothers every Guyanese, with the exception of course, of the political operatives, who, in their own delinquency as leaders of this nation, have not only short-changed the Guyanese people, but have also compromised the integrity of all of their parties, with this wishy-washy, ‘don-cay-dam’ attitude they so shamelessly display.
Even with elections just months away, we the people are still in the dark about who the presidential candidates for all or any of these parties are or will be.
These parties spend so much time berating and belittling each other, that they have clearly missed the mark here.
They have failed to recognise the importance of personally familiarizing the population with the party’s choice of the presidential candidate, and in so doing, have taken for granted the citizens of this country, and their right to know this.
For the 2008 U.S. Presidential election, President Obama was campaigning at least two years in advance.
John Mc Cain was also campaigning well in advance of the same election. The candidates were all campaigning vigorously in order to foster a social relationship with the people of their country.
They believed, more than anything, in the power of the people, and this is why it was crucial for them to personally familiarize themselves with Americans, sharing with them, their political platforms, and reassuring them of their interest and ability to address effectively, the issues that affect them.
The point I’m trying to make here, is that it that in any social relationship, there must exist the principle of reciprocity. You cannot expect people to give you their vote for nothing in return. It is highly undemocratic and utterly unacceptable that these arrogant politicians could so brazenly disregard the people on whose votes they depend, and just carry on merrily as if all is well with the people.
Accountability breeds trust and we demand that our right as a people of a democratic state, to know who our presidential candidates are for all of the political parties.
I do hope that the PPP/C, the PNCR, the AFC, the GAP ROAR, the Justice for All, the United Force (TUF), and all the other parties that I may have neglected to mention will get their acts together and once and for all, officially bring to the people of Guyana, their presidential candidates for the 2011 Elections.
