The Ministry of Education has seen the need to introduce Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) curriculum as a timetabled subject at the Grade Seven in 30 secondary schools in eight education districts.
In an effort to effectively equip teachers with the necessary tools to deliver the subject, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention Programme, Phase II (GHARP II), funded by the US President Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) yesterday commenced a workshop intended for a selected amount of teachers/educators to be trained in this field.
The official opening took place yesterday at 9:00h at Regency Suites/ Hotel. According to a press release issued yesterday there is “growing incidence of violence, substance abuse, and irresponsible sexual activity (that lead to unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections including HIV), among adolescents, factors that subsequently may affect academic performance and school attendance”.
HFLE is intended to assist in the elimination of all these hindrances that are contributing to persons not finishing school.
According to the press release, the training will be led by a CARICOM Consultant, Dr. Jennifer Critchlow, who possesses a wealth of regional experience in HFLE Curriculum Development and Adaptation, Teacher training, Monitoring and Classroom Observation.
The feature address was delivered by Dr Morella Joseph, Programme Director of Caricom.
