– reputed husband on the run
Just hours after packing her things and moving out to escape an abusive relationship, 31-year-old security guard Deon Stephens was brutally murdered at her mother’s Vigilance South, East Coast Demerara home shortly after 22:00 hrs last night.
Stephens, whose address was not given, was reportedly cornered outside while taking a bath and stabbed in the chest, neck and right breast.
The palm of her right hand was also badly slashed from trying to grab her attacker’s knife.
The suspect is said to be Stephen’s reputed husband who fled the scene and was still at large at press time.
Kaieteur News understands that the security guard was the victim of an abusive relationship.
Yesterday, a frustrated Deon Stephens decided to leave the home.
Police ranks reportedly accompanied her to the premises and watched as she packed her belongings, which she took to her mother’s East Coast Demerara home.
But even there she was not safe.
Kaieteur News was told that Stephens was bathing in the yard when her 14-year-old son heard her screaming.
On venturing outside, the lad reportedly saw a man choking his mother.
Stephens managed to break free and run to the door, but her assailant cornered her before she could make it inside and began to attack her with a knife. The woman attempted to grab the weapon but was badly slashed in the palm of her right hand.
Sources said that the woman’s attacker then plunged the knife into her chest, right breast and neck before fleeing.
Shephens’ relatives rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where she was pronounced dead on arrival at around 22:30 hrs.
Stephens is just one of several women who have been murdered this year by abusive spouses or boyfriends.
