– Commissioner Greene
In wake of the recent execution-style killing that left five persons, including a toddler, dead and the Commissioner of Police contention that one of the victims was a ‘paid hit-man’ many questions have been raised.
During a recent press conference, Commissioner of Police Henry Greene had said that Steve Jupiter called ‘Steve Man’ was always known to the police as he was a ‘paid hit-man’.
Responding to questions from sections of the media about why this ‘known hit-man’ was never arrested, charged and placed before the court, the Commissioner said there was never concrete evidence.
His statement further sparked questions about how useful has the wire tapping legislation been to the force. To that Greene said while the legislation provides for a lot, the necessary equipment is not in place for the police force to utilise.
He added that in the case of Steve Jupiter, there was never enough evidence to proceed with charges.
“He “Jupiter” has been in the hands of the law several times but we had nothing solid to go and people never come forward to give us information.”
“It’s not as straight forward as people think we know a lot of people involved in crimes but we can’t catch them…what we are faced with it that no body is willing to come forward.”
He further stated that help is sought whenever the need arises and we do surveillance whenever necessary.
According to the Commissioner, people will give information once they are held in another country as opposed to local law enforcement agencies.
On the same issue, when contacted the head of another law and drug enforcement agency said they too are faced with the same issues.
It was pointed out that all law enforcement agencies are working with their limited resources. The source said, while the law now provides for plea bargains as well, that is of no help in solving drug and other crimes.
“The society we live in is very small and everybody knows somebody so people are not willing to come forward,” the source observed.
