Mumbai’s upset defeat on Friday shows that in T20 cricket even the powerful IPL teams can be beaten and has given the Guyanese more confidence as they face IPL side Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening match of the Champions League T20 tournament today here in South Africa.
“We are confident that once we play to our potential we can go all the way and the pressure will be on the Challengers tomorrow especially what happened to Mumbai Indians on Friday,” Skipper Sarwan said.
The team practiced at the Wanderers ground on Saturday afternoon after a small celebration for Foo’s 20th birthday and Sarwan feels that keeping calm under pressure and batting well will be important to success.
“Our batting is our strength and we have to stay focused and field well. We are all in this together and the team spirit is great. The ball should bounce a bit more than home but we have talked about that and we are ready,” Sarwan said.
The Guyana captain said that the pressure will be on the Challengers today especially after they saw what happened to their fellow Indian side which included the great Sachin Tendulkar and T20 star Kireon Pollard.
“Tendulkar batted well and Pollard hit a few boundaries but Mumbai Indians still lost because in T20 cricket you need most of the guys to contribute in some way and once we field well and post a decent score I know we can cause the second major upset of this competition,” and upbeat Sarwan told Kaieteur Sport after the team’s final practice session yesterday before today’s big game.
Coach Seeram said the medium pacers looked a lot sharper in the nets on the hard pitches and was also confident Guyana can do well.
“The difference between teams in T20 cricket is not as big as in the longer version and everyone is eager to get going. The first match will be important since the guys could be a bit nervous but seeing how Mumbai Indians lose have given us a lot of confidence that we can create another up set tomorrow (Sunday),” Seeram added.
“Our bowling strength is spin but with the little extra help our pacers should be a bigger problem for the batsmen than they were in the flat pitches when we won the Caribbean Cup and everyone in the Guyana camp believes we can reach the semi-final. For now we are taking one match at a time and I know we are ready,” Seeram concluded.
