Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, yesterday called for members of the judiciary to “embrace the changes in the Sexual Offences Act 2010”. Her call came in the wake of a meeting with visiting Trinidadian Jurist, Justice Gillian Lucky.
Justice Lucky, a sitting Judge in the High Court of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is in Guyana to conduct a workshop with Magistrates.
The workshop is a part of the preparation of the judiciary for handling cases under the recently enacted Sexual Offences legislation.
Justice Lucky brings a wealth of experience to the workshop. She is currently a High Court Judge (Criminal Assizes) and was Senior State Counsel in the chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions for seven years.
She was also a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament for seven years and served as a Government Senator and Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs for a year.
While on the bench, Justice Lucky remains as a member of the teaching staff of the Hugh Wooding Law School and is Principal, Director of Academic Studies and Lecturer, Academy of Tertiary Studies (ATS).
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Manickchand, said that “we are privileged to have someone of Justice Lucky’s calibre, participating in our activities for readiness for handling sexual offences going forward.”
She added that “the new legislation contains significant protections and provisions for the vulnerable but does this through new procedures that require careful examination and a high level of training that ensures that the protections are delivered in the courts.”
The Magistrates’ workshop is the first in a series for members of the judiciary, DPP Chambers, and police prosecutors to be held between September and November.
These workshops are being organised by the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security with support from UNICEF.
