Armed bandits shot and killed a 36-year-old miner at Kaikan, in the Upper Cuyuni District yesterday, while the man was purchasing ration for his mining camp situated in that area.
His relatives told this publication that two suspects, believed to be Venezuelans, are in custody assisting the police with investigations.
Reports emanating from Region Seven state that Michael Higgins had earlier left his business place to purchase ration from neighbouring Venezuela when he was attacked by two armed bandits who carted off a large sum of cash he had in his possession.
Higgins’s brother, O’Neil, related that he received a call from his brother last Friday informing him that he was in Venezuela and was experiencing transportation problems. He said that his brother had made plans to return to the camp tomorrow morning. Michael’s family described him as a caring and loving individual who diligently cared for his family.
He leaves to mourn his 13-year-old daughter and his elderly mother.
