Gunmen struck the Hack family shortly after 19:00 hours last evening, even as they were relaxing under their Mon Repos home in hammocks and on benches placed there for that very purpose.
According to reports, the gunmen entered the yard and immediately started to assault the senior Hack who earns his living as a butcher.
One neighbour said that the gunmen marched the family upstairs, beating both husband and wife all the time.
They then discharged a volley of gunshots to dissuade anyone from going to the aid of the beleaguered family.
Once upstairs, according to the neighbours, the gunmen continued to beat the male Hack, forcing him to disclose where he kept his money and jewellery. The wife was not spared as she too was made to reveal the location of her jewellery.
The gunmen then fled the scene, according to neighbours, with a substantial haul.
The Beterverwagting Police Station is no more than a few minutes away but it was some time before they could respond.
More details in a subsequent issue.
