A 21-year-old bank employee was badly injured at around 18:40 hrs last night after she was run over by a car driven by a thief who had snatched her mobile phone.
The victim, identified as Sheema Mangar, was callously run over and dragged for several yards along Camp Street, after standing in front of the car to prevent the thief from escaping.
She was admitted to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital with broken arms, and a deep gash to the forehead.
The thief fled with the victim’s Blackberry cell phone.
An eyewitness told Kaieteur News that Mangar, who is said to be a Demerara Bank Limited employee, was apparently waiting for transportation in North Road, near Camp Street, when the thief struck.
The eyewitness recalled that the robber’s car was parked a short distance away in Camp Street, opposite the Bedford Methodist Church.
The source said that she realised that something was amiss when she saw a dark-complexioned man, who was wearing a red sweater, run from North Road and enter the parked car.
The eyewitness said that she then saw a young woman, who was wearing a bank employee’s uniform, run towards the car while shouting “thief, thief.”
The source said that the woman then stood in front of the car, which was facing north, and shouted: “Give me my cell phone.”
But according to the eyewitness, the occupant of the car responded by ran over Mangar, dragging her to Church Street. He then fled east along Church Street.
The eyewitness described the vehicle as a ‘fawn-coloured’ or silver grey car, but said that she failed to see the license number.
Meanwhile, other passersby ran to the injured woman. She was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation before being transferred to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Kaieteur News understands that the victim’s relatives and colleagues were notified.
Her attacker was still at large at press time.
