Social Workers and counselors in Region Ten over the past two days participated in a Sexual and Domestic Violence protocols training workshop, which was funded by the USAID Governance Enhancement Project in collaboration with UNFPA and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
Facilitators were Vidyaratha Kissoon of Help and Shelter, and Abbas Mancey, from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
The workshop was conducted in the Macaw Training Centre of the Linden Enterprise Network Building on Republic Avenue, Linden.
Kissoon said that the workshop brought out very ‘rich’ discussions among participants who were drawn from various sectors of society.
He acknowledged that Linden definitely needs ‘space’ to accommodate persons who are victims of abuse; and pointed out that it was unfortunate that persons know of situations of abuse, but fail to report them.
This, he acknowledged, was often due to the fact that some persons don’t know who to go to, and this results in a feeling of helplessness.
Poor police response to reports of abuse was also cited as another factor that inhibits reportage of such incidents.
The Police meanwhile indicated zero tolerance towards domestic abuse, but stated that there isn’t much that they could do, when victims insist that they only warn the perpetrators.
Abbas Mancey of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, acknowledged the lack of resources to respond to calls for help, and the constraints facing his Ministry, but promised to follow up all complaints and calls in cases of abuse.
During the workshop participants were very lively and vibrant, and spoke on various social ills, including alcohol abuse.
And they were given the opportunity to discuss their personal attitudes to sexual and domestic violence and the nature and dynamics of domestic violence.
The need for understanding, love and support for those subjected to these acts of violence, was also emphasised, while the domestic violence act was reviewed and discussed.
The objectives of the workshop were to increase participants’ knowledge as it relates to domestic violence, and their ability to respond appropriately in cases of intervention.
Their roles would have also been clarified, as cited in the Sexual and Domestic Violence protocols.
Other workshops will also be held in Kwakwani and Ituni, the facilitators promised.
