Police have detained an ex-policeman and another man in connection with the murder of gold dealers Ramdeo Deonarine and Jainarine Raghubar at Bartica.
But investigators have declined to say whether they have made any progress in the case. Kaieteur News understands that the ex-policeman was taken into custody after police received information that a car that he was driving fit the description of the vehicle that the killers used to transport the haul of gold and other valuables from the murder scene.
The second suspect is being represented by a prominent attorney. They are being interrogated at CID headquarters, Eve Leary while the car has been impounded. Kaieteur News understands that the occupants were involved in an accident along the Bartica trail to Georgetown.
Police had also detained a Bartica resident who owns the car. However, he was released on $100,000 bail yesterday after Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes filed habeas corpus proceedings.
Hughes told Kaieteur News that his client had been in custody since Tuesday. According to Hughes, his client gave police “every detail” of his actions on the night that the victims were killed.
Investigators appear to be leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to solve the case.
Several other people have been questioned, including a female taxi service dispatcher who worked on the night of the murder.
Police had received reports that a vehicle from the taxi service had picked up persons near the house where the gold dealers were slain during the wee hours of Sunday morning.
The passengers were reportedly transported to the taxi service base. Another vehicle from the same taxi service took the passengers into “the line” (the trail leading into the interior).
Investigators were reportedly also suspicious after the dispatcher left for Georgetown on the same day that the bodies were discovered.
However, she has been cleared of any involvement.
The mutilated and bound bodies of Deonarine and Raguhbar were found last Sunday in a house at Second Avenue, Bartica.
The discovery was made by a female associate of Deonarine who claimed that she was invited by him to spend the day in Bartica.
Commissioner of Police Henry Greene has stated that some of the injuries Deonarine sustained suggest that he was tortured before having his throat slit.
The Commissioner said that while Jainarine Raghubar had a single wound to the neck, his business colleague, Deonarine, had several slashes about his body.
According to the Commissioner, the owner of the building, Ricky Ramnarine, said that his office which is located in the bottom flat of the building was broken into. Ramnarine told police that $1.3M, two laptop computers, 100 ounces of raw gold, a .32 Taurus pistol with six rounds and a Rolex wristwatch were stolen.
The police said that the perpetrators had broken into the premises and had also forced their way into the upper part of the building where the two men were sleeping.
Commissioner Greene said that the perpetrators took their victims to the lower portion of the building where they beat them, apparently to force them to disclose the location of even more money.
Greene also said that there was a ‘back to school party’ next door, with loud music. This would have masked any sounds coming from the victims during the attack.
