The woman who allegedly abducted an 18-year-old female on Friday, at the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company walked out of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, as a free woman since the teen refused to give evidence against her.
Odella Patterson was yesterday not required to plead to the indictable offence of abduction when she appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry.
It was alleged that Patterson, on Thursday, abducted Taneisha Fernandes and kept her against her will.
However, attorney at law Deborah Kumar, who acted in the interest of the Virtual Complainant, informed the court that her client was not willing to proceed with the matter.
The young girl was ordered by the Magistrate to enter into the witness box and declare that she did not want to proceed with the matter.
The court was told that on the day in question, Patterson snatched the teen from her workplace.
It was further stated that she was taken to a city hotel where she was allegedly assaulted by the woman.
At the end, the teen was ordered to pay $25,000 cost for wasting the court’s time.
Quick police action on Thursday led to Patterson’s arrest. The mother of four allegedly abducted Fernandes who was said to be “friendly” with Patterson’s reputed husband.
The police later swooped down on a Church Street hotel and rescued the teen.
This newspaper was told that the GT&T employee was about to leave on her lunch break when the woman confronted her.
An eyewitness to the incident had said that the teenager had just stepped out of the washroom when Patterson approached her and requested that she step outside for a chat.
Kaieteur News was told that the woman had earlier enquired from the teen where the washroom was, and was directed to it.
At this time the eyewitness said no one suspected anything amiss since the wife had a young child clutching to her arm.
The woman was seen talking to the teen and as the two neared the thoroughfare (Brickdam) a car drove up.
At this point, the eyewitness said, Patterson started pushing the woman into a silver grey Toyota AT 212 motorcar.
Other employees from the telephone company were alerted as to what took place and quickly called the police.
Swift work by the police helped rescue the teen. Meanwhile, sources from the hotel yesterday said that they are pressing charges against the Dennis “Smoothie” Adonis, the male who has been the centre of all the confusion.
Kaieteur News was told that managers from the hotel have submitted a written statement to the police. The hotel said that Adonis checked in last week as an overseas-based Guyanese and by yesterday had chalked up a sizeable bill.
According to the manager, Adonis had been ensconced there for 10 days at 9,280 per day as part of an indefinite stay. He also owed $600 for taxi fare; $9,729 for alcoholic beverages; $10,440 for meals, $1,500 for Digicel top ups, $650 for ice cream and $5,500 for C-point top ups, a grand total of $121,219.
Police sources confirmed that the managers had given a statement further adding that several other persons who saw the article in the newspaper came forward alleging various things.
This newspaper was reliably informed that Adonis is said to be wanted in connection with several frauds countrywide.
Adonis, according to police sources, is expected to appear in court on Monday.
