Sensei Winston Dunbar 5th Dan Chief Instructor for the Guyana Wado Ryu Karate Federation recently returned from Canada where he attended a Karate course taught by Masumi Shiomitsu, 9th Dan, Technical Advisor and Principal for the International Wado Ryu Karate Academy.
During this time he also trained at the Karate dojo of Sensei Alex Waith 7th Dan who is a Guyanese and Chief Instructor for the Canadian Wado Ryu Karate Federation. Both Sensei’s Shiomitsu and Waith have visited Guyana in the past several years to assist Sensei Dunbar in the development of Wado Ryu Karate in Guyana.
However, Shiomitsu Sensei is reducing his travel commitment at this stage of his life and has asked Sensei Waith to take the overall responsibility of supporting Sensei Dunbar in the future development of this Karate style in Guyana.
Wado Ryu Karate which is sometimes called Wado Ryu Ji Jitsu Kempo is a complete martial art that includes techniques of Ji Jitsu such as locking, throwing, grappling and defence against weapons such as knives and swords.
Although Wado Karate practioners do well in completion particularly the sparring, the Kata of Traditional Wado Karate is practiced more for self defence and not for winning competitions.
Sensei Dunbar suggested that although Karate competition, as a sport is good for the development of younger people, Karate should also be practiced to develop character and techniques for self defence.
Sensei Dunbar would like to thank Banks DIH Limited, Courtney Benn Contracting Services Limited, and the parents of his students who contributed towards making the trip possible.
In Guyana, the Guyana Wado-Ryu Karate Association has four (4) dojos at Banks DIH Sports Club, Mae’s School, Eccles Primary School and Dragline Street Tuschen East Bank Essequibo.
Persons from the age of 6 years and up interested in joining can contact Sensei Dunbar on 650-6836 or Sensei Nurse on 624-7052.
