Omar Shariff extended his score to 4 wins from as many games to maintain his lead when play in the DDL Topco Juices Chess Tournament resumed last Wednesday at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Georgetown.
Taffin Khan defeated Glenford Corlette to advance to 3 points while his dad, David is also on 3 points after defeating Alex Joseph.
After four rounds the tournament remains intricately poised with one other player, Shiv Nandalall also on three points. Glenford Corlette and Errol Tiwari are on two points apiece while Learie Webster, Dennis Dillon and Alex Joseph are bundled in the cellar on one point each.
Meanwhile, in earlier action, Shariff took advantage after Dillon blundered his Bishop, and a few moves later, his queen. Those blunders proved to be costly and Shariff capitalized. Learie Webster suffered three early losses in the tournament but rebounded to defeat Shiv Nandalall in a thrilling fourth round encounter. Webster applied the pressure from his first move and employed some beautiful combinations to secure a vital victory in the endgame.
In the other two games, Taffin Khan defeated Glenford Corlette, while the elder Khan, David got pass Alex Joseph.
The players pause for a well deserved rest before resuming activities next Tuesday from 17:45hrs at the Keishar’s Sports Club. The tournament is sponsored exclusively by DDL under the Topco Juice Brand.
