Lloyd Atkinson and Gwendolyn Atkinson of Mabaruma, Barima/Waini, were yesterday sentenced and denied bail respectively, when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, to answer the charge of trafficking in narcotics.
It is alleged that on Monday last, the couple was found with 803 grams of cannabis, after a search was executed at their home, by ranks of the Guyana Police Force.
Lloyd Atkinson, who was represented by attorney at law Huckumchand, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of $10,000.
Meanwhile Gwendolyn Atkinson, who was represented by the same lawyer, pleaded not guilty.
The lawyer in his application indicated that bail should be granted with leniency, since the woman is a mother so six, and her husband had been sentenced to jail. He further stated that the couple are occupants in the same home and since they are charged with the same offence, the matter should be treated as a “special case”
Police prosecutor Stephen Telford objected to bail on the grounds of the evidence against the defendant. Telford indicated that bail can sometimes be granted, if there are special reasons.
However, bail was refused by Magistrate Beharry and Gwendolyn Atkinson was remanded to prison. She is scheduled to make her next court appearance on September 14.
Also appearing before Magistrate Beharry was Shaun Marceleno of North West, Barima/Waini, who was charged with the unlawful and malicious wounding of Edward Atkinson.
It is alleged that on September 05, last, the defendant held the virtual complainant on the ground and dealt him kicks to the body and head, with the intention to inflict severe bodily harm.
Marceleno, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty to the charge. The defendant was remanded to prison, because the VC is still hospitalised.
Marceleno is scheduled to make his next court appearance on September 17.
