Former national Under-19 captain Eugene La Fleur has been appointed captain of the historic Berbice ‘A’ team that would be launched on Friday September 24 with a 50 overs match against a Demerara Under-23 team at the Everest Cricket Ground in the City.
The Berbice Cricket Board earlier this year announced plans for the formation of an ‘A’ team as part of their massive development and talent spotting programme.
Chairman of the Board’s Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster who is spearheading the ‘A’ team project said that with huge pool of cricketing talent in Berbice, many deserving players are unable to gain selection to the County’s senior team.
The ‘A’ team would be seen as a nursery for the senior team and will also help players to get accustomed to playing cricket at a higher level before their advent to the senior team.
Foster stated good performance at the ‘A’ level could result in a player being selected for the senior Inter County side.
The BCB has mandated that the ‘A’ team consist of only Under-23 players with at least five of players being Under-19’s who are available to play at this level the following year.
The Board would also be introducing a cap system for the ‘A’ team as done at all levels for the County.
Mr. Joseph Lewis, an East Bank Demerara based Berbician humbly has donated eighteen (18) ‘A’ team Inter County caps.
La Fleur would have as his deputy Steven Latcha, while Winston Smith would serve as Manager/Coach.
The 14 man squad reads: Eugene La Fleur (Captain), Steven Latcha (Vice Captain), Harrinarine Chattergoon, Renga Lachigadoo Latchman, Seon Hetmyer, Anthony Bramble, Troy Mathieson, Krisendat Ramoo, Keon Joseph, Keyron Fraser, Dominic Rickie, Loydel Lewis and Shawn Perreira.
BErbice will host Demerara the following weekend for a re-match.
