Following the recent recovery of a large quantity of pyrotechnics and ammunitions from the GDF Armory earlier in the week, and the subsequent detention of twenty Commissioned and 11 Senior Non Commissioned officers of the Guyana Defence Force, some ranks of that organization are disgruntled over what they refer to as partial treatment to a select group of ‘privileged’ ranks, even as some others are thrown to the wolves for similar or lesser offences.
A source who requested anonymity disclosed that a certain officer of the Military Intelligence Department (MID) was among those that were caught with illegal weapons and ammunition during the search conducted by members of the intelligence unit.
The source further said that several of the Army’s top brass are aware of this occurrence but for strange and inexplicable reasons, are very silent.
The source said that it appears as though the laws are only applicable to a select few, while other ‘big ones’ can do what they please and walk scot free.
The source drew attention to a senior officer who had reportedly lost a loaded pistol earlier this year but was not made to answer for this transgression.
The source revealed that the officer in question now enjoys the freedom to do whatever he wants.
Another startling discovery, according to the source, is that up to the time that the Chief of Staff had convened a press conference the weapons had still not been fully accounted for, even though it was being claimed that all the weapons had been recovered.
It was further pointed out that another senior rank was court marshaled twice late last year for merely uplifting a pistol from the armory at Base Camp Ayanganna.
Information received also suggested that the ranks that were a part of ‘Operation Stingray’ were paid $15,000 each while another top brass received $100,000.
The issue had its genesis when members of the intelligence unit of the GDF conducted a surprise raid on several of their bases and discovered hundreds of 7.62mm x 39mm rounds which had mysteriously disappeared over a two-month period.
This triggered off a series of arrests and the Army has since launched an investigation into the matter.
