Four additional charges of obtaining money by false pretence were yesterday instituted against car dealer Robert Allen Gates, when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Last week Gates was accused of obtaining over $7.4M from Thadius Khani, Jermaine Mason, Romeo Barrington Randolph, Seerani, Urian Da Silva, Yonette Moses, Chandrika Arjune, Christopher Mc Adam, Delson Thorington, Ovid Adams, Imran Mohamed Ally, Otto Mitchell and Mark Anthony Lewis.
The charge further read that Gates falsely pretended that he was in a position to acquire motor vehicles for the said virtual complainants knowing same to be false.
Yesterday as the new charges were being read to Gates he stood calmly in the prisoner’s dock.
The new charges state that between May 24 and June 30, Gates obtained the sum of $660,000 from Lester Cummings under the pretence that he could have acquired a Toyota Raum and RZ minibus.
Another charge stated that on June 26, he obtained $400,000 from Anita Singh under the pretext that he could have obtained a motor car for her.
Thirdly, Gates was accused of obtaining $300,000 from Clarence Jordon pretending that he could have obtained a motorcycle for him.
The penultimate charge stated that Gates on April 3, obtained $200,000 from Andy Brisport, claiming that he could have obtained a motor vehicle for the man.
Gates was also accused of obtaining $400,000 on June 2, from Rushelle Mc Kenzie pretending that he could have obtained a motor vehicle for her.
He was not required to
plead since all the charges were indictable. His lawyer, Jorwar Misir, in applying for bail, contended that the magistrate should not look at the multiplicity of the charges.
Further in his address to the court, the lawyer stated that his client and all of the defendants entered into a legal binding contract. The lawyer opined that his client was trying to obtain cheap and good quality vehicles for the defendants.
At this point, Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford interjected and stated that the company in which Gates is claiming he was buying the cars from does not exist.
Furthermore the prosecutor requested that the magistrate adjourn the matter so that they could send the files to the Director of Public Prosecutors for legal advice.
The prosecutor also stated that the address which was given to the court by Gates differs from what the police have.
Gates on the last occasion had explained that matters before the court were all of a contractual basis. He told the court that his business is registered adding that he had recently applied for a dealership licence.
According to Gates, the entire problem stemmed from his business partner not living up to his end of the bargain. He explained his partner who lives in the United States of America, would normally supply vehicles for him, but failed to do so on this occasion.
“I would send the money to him and he would purchase and ship the vehicles down to Guyana” said Gates.
As it related to bail, Gates had told the magistrate that he preferred to stay in prison.
“My worship I think I would sleep better if I’m in jail….plus I know the prosecutor would object to bail because of the nature of the matter” Gates said.
