Bartica double-murder…
– ‘Jai’ cremated yesterday
Commissioner of Police Henry Greene has stated that the marks on Ramdeo Deonarine, one of the two gold dealers who were brutally murdered, suggest that he was tortured before having his throat slit. According to Greene, while Jainarine Raghubar had a single wound to the neck, his business colleague, Deonarine, had several slashes about his body.
“We believe that Deonarine was being tortured so that he would give his attacker more information or cash…but we cannot confirm this.”
A post mortem report performed on both victims by pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, revealed that both men died as a result of shock and hemorrhage due to incise wounds to the throat.
According to the Commissioner, the owner of the building, Ricky Ramnarine, said that his office which is located in the bottom flat of the building was broken into.
“Ramnarine said his office was broken into and $1.3 Million, two laptop computers, 100 ounces of raw gold, a .32 Taurus pistol with six rounds and a Rolex wristwatch were taken.”
The police said that the perpetrators forced their way into the home. Commissioner Greene also said that they had to force into the upper part of the building where the two men were sleeping.
He said that they removed the men to the lower portion of the building where they beat them perhaps in a quest to force them to disclose the location of even more money.
The Commissioner added that the police cannot ascertain the losses of the two men but they were able to establish that their firearms were stolen.
“We have not given up; we will run into the firearms, given the capability of our firearm squad.”
Commissioner Greene said that there was a ‘back to school party’ next door, with loud music. This would have masked any sounds coming from the victims during the attack.
In addition, the Commissioner said so far one man is currently in custody assisting with investigations as they continue to work on all possible leads.
Up to press time yesterday the detainee was still in custody. The Commissioner said they are getting bits of information.
“We were told that persons were seen hurriedly leaving the house and leaving Bartica the morning after the incident with ‘bulky bags’.
The Commissioner pointed out that so far the information they have received has shown that both Deonarine and Raghubar were legitimate gold dealers.
On Sunday last the bloody bodies of Deonarine and Raguhbar were found in a house at Second Avenue, Bartica. Both men were found with their throats slit, hands and feet tied together and with sheets wrapped around their heads. The discovery was made by a female associate of Deonarine who claimed that she was invited by him to spend the day in Bartica. However, after arriving in Bartica the Sunday morning and having her telephone calls being forwarded to voice mail, the female entered the house where she made the discovery.
Meanwhile, Jainarine Raghubar was yesterday cremated. The somber mood reflected a gathering stunned by the senseless slaying of a popular businessman and friend.
Raghubar was cremated after a service was held for him at his residence in Fairfield, Essequibo. His body arrived at his home at around 09:00hrs, but the actual viewing of his body was observed after the singing of Bhajans and a prayer was recited by Pandit Deodat Dhanraj.
In reflecting on the life of the deceased, Pandit Deodat proclaimed that Raghubar was hard-working, friendly and an extremely generous individual.
In memory of the loving father, Raghubar’s five daughters gave a beautiful rendition of Celine Dion’s “Because you loved me”.
Kaieteur News understands that Deonarine’s relatives are awaiting the arrival of others from North America for his funeral.
