– 20 more than corresponding period last year
The seven homicides, including the execution-style killing of five persons in a car at Cummings Lodge that occurred over last weekend has pushed the country’s murder figure to 97.
This is 20 more than for the corresponding period last year.
Last weekend was probably the bloodiest in Guyana in terms of murders, barring the massacres in Lusignan and Bartica two years ago.
On Saturday night gunmen opened fire on a car with five persons, including a three-year-old boy and his mother, inside.
Three persons who were said to be the main targets of the gunmen were killed on the spot, while the three-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Hospital. The child’s mother succumbed the following day while receiving treatment at the same medical institution.
But just when the country was trying to come to grips with that incident, news of the brutal murders of two gold miners reverberated, bringing back memories of the shocking crime wave of 2002-2006.
Speaking at a news conference yesterday, Police Commissioner Henry Greene disclosed that disorderly murders topped the list with 32. He described these types of murders as those which involve persons engaged in mostly drunken arguments, which mainly occurred in interior locations. He announced that the police E and F Division (interior) has had 14 disorderly murders so far this year.
“As you know there have been several murders within the last two weeks in the bush, most of them arising from people drinking and arguing and then either stabbing each other or beating each other,” the Top Cop told members of the media.
According to the Commissioner, there were only nine such murders in the interior last year.
Domestic murders have so far accounted for 13 deaths, compared to 19 last year.
In 2009, there were 13 robbery murders, a figure which is dwarfed this year which has so far seen 21 such killings.Significantly, last weekend’s Cummings Lodge execution-style killings have pushed that figure to nine, compared with a mere two for 2009. Revealing other figures, the Police Commissioner said that the police have so far seized 57 illegal firearms for this year, two less than for the same period last year.
There were declines in the figures relating to robbery under arms and robbery with violence, while there was also a decrease in the number of robbery with aggravation.
“There was a significant decline in the area of rape. I don’t know if the new sexual offences act might have sent a serious warning to some men. We have had a twenty-five percent drop for this year compared to last year
Except for West Demerara, all the other Police Divisions have so far recorded a decline in serious crimes. However, Greene assured that the Police Force will try to maintain a lid on criminal activities with the aim of further reducing such incidents.
“We will continue to carry the pressure. We will continue to do our work, based on intelligence that we have. We’ll continue to out our best foot forward as it relates to these matters,” Greene stated.
