The monthly ProAm boxing cards are quickly developing into interesting affairs and this was ascertained from the heated debates and discussions triggered after the culmination of each of these cards. It seems as though the organizers are shifting into another gear and from all appearances the action this month, slated for Friday September 24, promises to be heated and interesting.
This view was solidified when it was recently announced that former European Boxing champion, world rater and current middleweight champion, Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman will comprise a part of the four bout affair.
He will match gloves with Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones in what is anticipated to be a keenly contested thriller. The supporting card will also comprise of three entertaining bouts starting with two debutants, Simeion Hardy and Gavin ‘Hercules’ Williams battling in a junior/middleweight affair.
Clive Atwell, currently honing his skills in Antigua and Barbuda, returns to battle Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers in a lightweight bout while Pauline London and Debbie Tyson will square off for the second time in as many months to settle the issue of superiority once and for all. Theirs is a light/heavyweight fight and London enters the ring with a psychological edge having won the first encounter.
The boxers are scheduled to convene at the Abdool and Abdool offices, Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown for the signing ceremony this afternoon.
Commenting on the compilation of the card moments after the announcement, Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) President, Peter Abdool disclosed that organizers are now in a quandary to select eight boxers each month. He explained that now that the cards have developed, the organizers are being bombarded by the boxers who are all anxious to be a part of the show.
The GBBC boss intimated that while he was elated by this development he was forced to disappoint some of the boxers since the card could only accommodate four professional bouts, the same amount as the amateurs. “The boxers desirous of earning a spot on the cards will automatically have to lift their game to an acceptable level and merit their selection,” said Mr. Abdool. He further disclosed that the September card was only decided upon after a committee of GBBC officials had thoroughly examined all of the available resources. “We intend to deliver a qualitative package to the public and so the boxers would have to put a lot of effort into their training in order to merit their selection,” the GBBC boss explained.
Meanwhile, with just a little under three weeks to whip themselves into acceptable shapes, the various boxers have already opened camp at gyms around the city and its environs. Kaieteur Sport would be tracking down their activities with an aim of keeping its readership abreast of the developments.
