Sham Khan finished the first day’s play on four points from as many games to assume an early lead when the DDL Topco Juice Junior Chess Qualifier got underway at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Georgetown over the past week-end.
Saeed Ali, Raan Motilall and Carlos Petterson all dropped one game each and are sitting in the second place on three points apiece while five other players, Suhai Feng, Aslam Hussain, Khalid Gajraj, Kana Khan and Faraad Baksh are on 2 1/2 points each.
Rashad Hussain, Crystal Khan, Ryan Mckay, Shane Yassuf, Sheriffa Ali and Daryll Calistro all scored two points apiece while Ron Motilall, Adam Ramnarayan and Viddesh Shameer are on 1 1/2 points each. Rajendra Jetoo, Ganesh Persaud and Jason Barnwell are bundled in the cellar on one point each.
Meanwhile, nine players are competing in a round robin format in the senior category which saw Omar Shariff playing brilliantly to defeat Taffin Khan in their second round encounter. Khan used his vast experience and in a well calculated endgame was able to promote a pawn to queen, forcing Khan to resign.
Shariff also notched up a victory against Taffin’s father, David and finished the day on 3 points from as many games.
Shiv Nandalall also enjoyed a relatively successful opening day after defeating Dennis Dillon and Errol Tiwari. Nandalall is also on 3 points but was relegated to second place after the tie breaker system was employed.
Three other players are tied on two points each including Taffin Khan, David Khan and Glenford Corlette. Veteran player Errol Tiwari, Dennis Dillon and Alex Joseph are all on one point apiece, while Learie Webster is yet to score.
At the end of the tournament several of the senior players would be accorded their respective FIDE ratings. Among them are Taffin Khan, Shiv Nandalall, David Khan and Errol Tiwari. This would extend the number of local fide rated players to thirteen.
The senior players will resume action tomorrow at 17:45hrs while the juniors will continue on Saturday September 18 next from 15:00hrs at the same venue. The tournament is exclusively sponsored by DDL under the Topco Juices Brand.
