A 57-year-old man is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was allegedly struck down by Minister of Local Government Kellawan Lall, Saturday evening.
The man, John July, a special constable attached to the High Court and his friend whom he identified as Colin, were struck down on the East Coast Demerara Public Road.
A policeman who witnessed the accident said that after the Minister struck down the two persons he sped away from the scene.
The source also told this publication that the Minister’s vehicle was not lighted and was veering between the lanes.
The eyewitness added that the Minister’s son returned to the scene of the accident with the same vehicle and transported the injured persons to the hospital.
This newspaper was further told that police contacted the Minister and told him that he was wanted at the police station.
However up to press time the Minister had not gone back to the hospital or to the police station. He reportedly promised to meet with the Divisional Commander on Sunday but did not.
The Minister was not at work yesterday and despite promises by his secretary to have him call the reporter this was never done.
Yesterday, in the Male Surgical Ward, of the Georgetown Public Hospital, July had a large metal object inserted into his right leg, which was severely damaged.
A large tube was inserted into his abdomen to drain the fluids from his body. He was also receiving intravenous drips. July who was in tremendous pain managed to explain that he was returning from a wedding when the incident occurred.
He told this publication that he and his friend had noticed the vehicle because it was in the middle of the road.
“This vehicle was in the middle of the road and it ain’t had on no lights,” explained July. July said that his friend tried to swerve from the vehicle but it was too late and they were struck.
The man said that he heard the vehicle speeding away and he and his friend were left lying on the carriageway.
Minutes later July said the same vehicle returned and transported them to the hospital. Upon his arrival at hospital doctors quickly rushed him to the operating theatre. His condition is listed as stable.
July said he must commend the doctors and nurses of the Georgetown Public Hospital who were very kind and helpful to him.
