Twenty Commissioned officers of the Guyana Defence Force and 11 Senior Non Commissioned officers have been placed under close arrest following the disappearance and subsequent recovery of a large quantity of pyrotechnics and ammunitions from the GDF Armory.
A source close to the Army said that during Exercise Home Guard, approximately 460— 7.62mm x 39mm rounds mysteriously disappeared over a two-month period. This prompted a sting operation coordinated by the GDF Intelligence Unit and encompassed all rooms of Officers and Senior Non-Commission Officers.
It was during this activity that the missing ammunition and several 9mm pistols were unearthed.
Reports are that members of the intelligence unit responded to a tip off and forcefully entered the accommodation of the ranks. Sources said that a grenade was removed from one of the ranks’ rooms while over two hundred 7.62mm x 39mm rounds were discovered in another senior rank’s barracks.
Kaieteur News understands that it is a breach of force policy for any rank to have these items in his possession.
The GDF has been hit by several such incidents under the watch of Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best. Investigations are in progress.
