A 27-year-old father of one was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Sunday, moments after a freak accident at an East Coast Demerara lumber yard.
According to reports, some time around 11:30 hours, Prem Manohar Moolchand of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, was involved in a freak accident at the Rohit’s Lumber yard where he had been employed for close to two years.
The dead man’s wife, Samantha Moolchand, told this newspaper that she last saw her husband alive around 08:45 hours on Sunday when he left for work. The woman related that around noon on Sunday she received a call from one of her husband’s work colleague.
“Somebody called and tell me call me husband boss, so me ask wha happen and he just tell me call.”
The woman said that when she contacted her husband’s employer she was merely told that he was involved in an accident at the worksite but was given no further details.
According to Mrs. Moolchand, she immediately raced down to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she discovered that her husband was already dead.
She said it was only when she enquired from her husband’s colleague that she was told what transpired at the work site.
The woman explained that she was told that her husband was loading lumber onto a Canter with a Bobcat when a piece of wood slipped off and struck him into the chest, pinning him in the bobcat.
By the time Moolchand was removed from the Bobcat and rushed to the hospital he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The man’s wife said that her husband’s employer has since indicated his willingness to stand the funeral expense. She added that she is now left with a four-year-old son and that she is unemployed.
