As we have elaborated over the past year, the use of government advertising has become a weapon to strangle Kaieteur News and the Stabroek News. The decision that ads for the government will now be done via a designated website on the Internet, is an indication that this policy has now evolved into open warfare against both newspapers. This latest development in redirecting ads from the private media is intended to financially suffocate the Kaieteur News and the Stabroek News.
Newspapers depend on advertising for their financial survival. Kaieteur News is no different. A great deal of our revenue is derived from advertisements, including government ads. However, we have always made it clear that our primary mission is not about money. It is about making a difference in our country by providing the public with information and opinions which would allow them to make informed choices: the very quintessence of democratic participation.
The government claims that placing ads on the Internet rather than in the newspapers will result in savings to taxpayers. We respect the right of the government to seek greater value for money, but we also feel that the very purpose of these ads would be defeated by limiting their access only to the Internet. The public, we believe, has an interest in receiving information about government contracts and in the procurement of goods and services. By advertising in the print media, accountability and transparency are served, and the public’s right to information is respected and observed.
In order to preserve this public interest, Kaieteur News wishes to make an offer to the government that would allow it to save money while respecting the right of its citizens to access information about Government projects and contracts. We are making an offer to the government that it cannot refuse if it is genuine about respecting the right of the public to information.
Kaieteur News is prepared to carry most, if not all government ads, whenever space is available, free of cost.
As such, the government would not have an excuse of saying that it will be saving money by advertising only through its designated website.
We await the reaction of government to our offer.
