Dear Editor, Reference is made to the letter, “A presidential candidate should be aware of the constitutional provisions” (Kaieteur News, September 2, 2010). Let me restate the essential points being made by me in response to those who are calling for race to be a criterion for the selection of the opposition presidential candidate: 1) The constitution does not make race a criterion for the selection of president; 2) The constitution protects the right of every citizen to freedom of association, including the right to association on the grounds of race; 3) National development must take on board the protection of the rights of all, which are guaranteed in the constitution; 4) The constitution does not speak to the giving up of a right in order to enjoy another right; and 5) You cannot end discrimination against a people by asking them to accept discrimination against themselves. For the writer’s knowledge every citizen has a constitutional right to aspire to be president once s/he satisfies certain requirements. For anyone to question this intent on the grounds of race is indicative that s/he harbours racist views. Contrary to the writer’s partiality this matter is not about me, the amount of melanin in my skin, nor his/her claim of my political ambitions. I suffer no inferiority complex; I know my rights and any effort by anyone to trample on them would see me in the preferential fighting position of dying on my feet rather than submissively living on my knees. This is about the people and their rights which I will not remain silent on and let anyone think it is acceptable to transgress the right of anyone for political and/or personal expediency. Anyone who does this will find an opponent in me. The reference to a series of inconclusive abstract incidents has no bearing on my position and is therefore irrelevant. If the writer disagrees with any of the five areas mentioned above then s\he should provide the constitutional evidence to prove my position is unconstitutional.
