Dear Editor,
Emile Mervin expresses his support for the “AFC’s decision not to align with the Robert Corbin-led PNCR in the run-up to the 2011 election.” I recall the AFC stating at one time that it will not collate with the PNC then stating that it would be willing to work with elements in the PNCR. As a matter of fact several conflicting positions have come from various AFC members but the bottom line is that the AFC will not collate with those it considers not up to par with its brand of ‘clean’ politics.
I have identified the AFC’s brand of politics from its many acts of deception, from its formation to its willful creation of confusion in the opposition ranks in 2006 and now again as it seeks to gain support for itself; discrimination; deceptive collaboration with the PPP/C – as seen with Sheila Holder undermining the PSU nominee; anti democratic policies; oppression of women and from the constituent of the party which makes it no different to the race based PPP/C and the PNCR.
It is the AFC’s prerogative to collate or not to collate. However they cannot present an image to this nation of being a credible alternative when they choose not to collate, since this single act demonstrates that the AFC is not concerned about the governance of this nation and the well being of the people of this nation.
These self serving and divisive positions taken by the AFC which Emile Mervin supports will not remove the PPP from Office indirectly offering the PPP yet another term to further take Guyana down a path of destruction, bloodshed and chaos. Is this the agenda and has the sufferings of the Guyanese masses become secondary to the AFC’s efforts to multiply votes and build its political empire? Simple mathematical calculations will confirm that any third force drawing only from the opposition will: not be impacting the PPP; only serve to further subdivide the opposition; only be consolidating its political strength as the PPP maintains its political base. Further when the third force is more focused on dividing the opposition than consolidating with the opposition then Guyanese are being duped by a farce.
Mervin talks about the “the welfare of the people of Guyana under a corrupt, dictatorial-oriented regime.” Were he serious about removing this regime then all forces which can be mobilized into removing this regime, would be consolidated, more so since the numerical strength lies not in the AFC and even with a combined opposition is hard.
He talks about “a compliant major political opposition that has chosen to wait out the corrupt government and its acquiescent party for a phone call saying it is time for shared governance. In the interim, the public is being ripped off, butt-whipped, face slapped, gut-punched, head-butted, back-stabbed, and so on and so forth. Where was Mervin when the AFC refused to engage in mass protests and where is Mervin as the AFC undermines efforts to fight the PPP and collaborates to undermine anti PPP forces?
He is right here being an apologist for a party that talks of change but offers nothing new as it seeks only to sacrifice Guyanese under another five or maybe 15 years of PPP rule so that the AFC can build its political base from that of the PNCR.
Mervin and those who share his views and politics are reminded that at this juncture the battle is about national elections and the first prize is that of the Presidency not of the Opposition Leader which is what the AFC is aiming for.
And all other Guyanese who must seriously decide if a third force of the nature of the AFC will bring about the resolution to the poor governance and stagnation and divisive politics we face under the PPP.
Can we take another five years and can we allow the AFC and persons like Mervin to fool this nation into believing that division and confusion in the ranks of the opposition will serve us well. This farce that is being trust on us by those who fund and those who advance these divisions among our people must be exposed.
Emile again goes into his victim role and nameless, faceless positions of weakness to elicit sympathy for his positions – a sign of weakness in his usual instinctive predatory nature. He believes he has a duty to speak publicly on matters that will affect the future of all Guyanese.
He is a prolific letter writer and must be true to this nation and our efforts to bring change for 2011 to this PPP ravaged nation. Maybe if Emile stops being so rabidly AFC he would do much better but he clouds his judgment and supports continued lawlessness albeit from a younger breed of politicians.
Guyana needs a new breed of social analysts, writers, as well as politicians with integrity and commitment to nation building. We need an era of accountability at all levels and from all. Neither the AFC nor Emile Mervin offers us that.
