All Guyana is rooting for the Amazon Conquerors – Sports Minister
By Sean Devers
After winning the inaugural Caribbean Championship T/20 competition last month and hectic practice sessions under Coach Rovindra Seeram and assistant Roger Harper, the Guyana Amazon Conquerors are ready to roar in South Africa as they represent the entire West Indies in the Champions League T/20 tournament which starts on Friday.
The Ramnaresh Sarwan led Guyana team play their opening match on Sunday from 11:30AM against Royal Challengers Bangalore and yesterday the Guyana Government handed over the $20 Million sponsorship cheque to the Guyana Cricket Board at the Sports Minister’s office on Main Street.
Sports Minister Dr Frank Anthony presented the check to GCB President Chetram Singh and said that all Guyana was rooting for the Guyana Amazon Conquerors as they depart for South Africa tomorrow.
The team will leave Guyana on a charted flight after the cancellation of their initial commercial flight to Barbados and then travel from there to South Africa via London.
The Guyanese will play four preliminary round games as they hope to follow Trinidad and Tobago’s unbeaten run to the final in last year’s tournament in India.
“After a discussion between President Bharat Jagdeo, the GCB President (Chetram Singh), the GCB Secretary (Anand Sanasie) and myself, we (Government) decide to fully sponsor the team to the tune of US$100,000 ($20Million),” Dr Anthony said at the simple presentation.
All of the players’ clothing and kit will have Ministry of Tourism branding using their theme ‘Amazon Adventure’ while the players’ shirts and head gear will carry the Guyana flag,” Dr Anthony explained.
Jingles and promos promoting Guyana’s eco-tourism industry will be sent to South Africa and will be used on International Television when Guyana plays while commercials will be aired locally.
“We understand that Guyana as a country will get plenty of exposure from this sponsorship and we are confident that they will do well after their success in the Caribbean Championships,” the Minister added.
Dr Anthony says the team’s name capture what the South Americans will be going to do to the other teams in South Africa….conqueror all.
GBC President Chetram Singh thanked the Government for their support and said that he was confident that the team will ‘do us proud’ in South Africa.
“In addition to doing well on the field our team will be promoting Guyana and we hope that at the end of the competition the players would have helped in a big way in improving Guyana’s image to the world and when we return home we hope that everyone knows about Guyana,” Singh, the longest serving WICB Director, said.
The team broke camp on Friday and the players will reassemble today in the city before leaving tomorrow. GCB Secretary Anand Sanasie signed on behalf of the GCB.
