Even though Guyanese youths are constantly faced with many social epidemics, some are being given an opportunity of becoming well-rounded individuals through a ‘for youth by youth initiative’ called ‘Caribbean Healthy Lifestyle Programme’ (CHLP).
The healthy lifestyle initiative “Your life, your health, make it right”, was designed to illustrate how sports can be used to help those involved, not only to realise their true potential as athletes, but to also aid in their personal development.
The initial intent of this club was to assist young women involved in netball to become more aware of the necessity and benefits of maintaining a “healthy lifestyle” and to provide an insight into the process of developing good leadership qualities.
According to CHLP President, Tracy O’Neal, as the programme develops, it will be extended to embrace young people in many other sport disciplines. She said a CHLP programme exists in most of the other Caribbean territories.
CHLP has impacted many lives in a positive way; a few of those persons that benefited include, Ato Rockcliffe, Jaime Meyers and Twain Hemerding among others.
The club focuses on topics that dramatically affect young people- irrespective of race, social background or financial status, such as peer pressure, self-esteem building, teenage pregnancy, Effective decision making, responsible sexuality and setting goals.
According to CHLP member, Twain Hemerding, the club has been “a breath of fresh air” since it has allowed him to explore his virgin talents. Ato Rockcliffe is another example of the effectiveness of the programme. He was the previous CHLP President, and at 23 years old, he is on the verge of completing his masters at the University of West Indies, St Augustine.
Over the past few years, the CHLP has developed a relationship with another Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Trinidad and Tobago called ‘Kicking Aids Out’ (KAO), that works hand in hand with the club to maximise the potential of Caribbean youths.
