When rivalry in the 3rd Annual Cheddi Jagan KO memorial football competition continued last weekend in Berbice, a total of 12 goals were recorded in the two matches contested at Burnham Park, New Amsterdam.
The highlight of the weekend was Cougars FC’s comprehensive 9-0 drubbing of Strike Force who failed to ignite on a sunny afternoon. In the other showdown, East Demerara’s Mahaica Determinators were eliminated from the competition by the odd goal in three against home side, Pistons, firing on all cylinders.
Taking centre stage on the day was Winston Benjamin whose six (6) goal blitz took the wind out of the sails of Strike Force; Horace Roach netted a brace and Alvin Reynolds the other for Cougars.
Benjamin was on target in the 10th, 27th, 45th, 48th, 49th and 58th minute against the porous defence of their hapless opponents. Roach converted in the 17th and 31st minute with Reynolds’ lone effort recorded in the 18th minute. Paul Hector (27) and Marty Romney (48) were the players who are responsible for Pistons’ place in the semifinals; Mahaica got their consolation strike off the boot of Julian Hart 64 minutes into the match.
Mahaica were under early pressure when Sherwin Hermanstine was given marching orders by Referee Virgil Watts in the 38th minute for violent conduct. Rishawn Pilgrim of Pistons United was expelled by the said official after being booked in the 22nd and 44th minutes for unsporting behavior.
The tournament will continue tomorrow with Monedderlust FC facing Cougars at the Blairmont Community Centre Ground from 14:00hrs with the main attraction featuring Rosignol United and the Guyana Defence Force from 16:00hrs in a Guyana Football Federation Super League fixture.
