A 30-year-old chipper operator of Barama Company’s veneer plant at Buckhall, in the Essequibo River, met a horrific death after he was dragged through the machine he was using and shredded to pieces.
The fragmented remains of Jason Fraser were discovered early yesterday morning, three days after he disappeared while working on the machine.
Security officials of the company were greeted with a foul smell when they approached the plant around 07:00 hours yesterday. Suspecting that the smell emanating might be that of the operator’s remains, company officials quickly cordoned off the area and called in the police.
“He was missing since Monday and was apparently pulled through the machine in what can be described as a freak accident,” an official said.
The official stated that all the safety features of the machine were intact and there were no signs that Fraser had encountered problems with it.
Kaieteur News understands that Fraser was last seen at around 16:00 hours on Monday.
However, an hour later he was discovered missing after colleagues noticed that the machine was “backing up” and assumed that Fraser had abandoned the chipper.
A check of his room in the company’s compound came up empty handed as none of his personal belongings were found, giving company officials the impression that he had left the location, which according to the official was not unusual.
It was later disclosed that Fraser had relocated to another room where his personal belongings were eventually found.
This convinced officials that Fraser was still around and might have encountered some sort of misfortune.
It was only yesterday morning while checking near the chipper that officials observed the foul smell and later found what appeared to be pieces of Fraser’s body.
The Buckhall Veneer Plant is currently undergoing production testing for its planned official opening soon.
